Why We Create Patterns
The Four Reasons Why We Create Patterns
By Zebulon Thomas
1. To protect us from something, protect us from not getting hurt, from not getting involved emotionally, from not getting upset, from not getting angry and from not losing control.
This is the pattern of defense: This pattern keeps us on the defensive side of everything. We feel that we have too much to lose or that we have something to hide. We play defense in almost every second of the day. If you keep playing on the defensive you’re never going to let anybody in, you’re never going to be able to enjoy your life because that requires some offensive plays and all you know how to do is play defense. So grab the ball and run for it, score some points and celebrate.
Break this pattern share something personal with a friend or with a loved one. Lower your walls and let people be a part of your life. Share moments of connection by letting yourself be yourself. Laugh out loud, be goofy and relax.
2. To keep us from moving forward, to hold us in our comfort zone. We try to live in a box so that we feel safe and therefore we create patterns that keep us locked in position.
This is the pattern of security: We create a pattern like this to comfort ourselves so that we feel protected in some way. You’re never going to grow and experience anything new and exciting in life if you stay in your box; you’re never going to know what you’re capable of achieving and creating if you don’t step outside of your comfort zone here and there.
Break this pattern by expanding your comfort zone, letting new opportunities in. Change the direction in your mind from looking behind you to looking in front of you. Move in the direction that brings you more of the things that make you happy.
3. To deal with change and to deal with stress. We create a series of patterns to get us through the rough times.
This is the pattern of disconnection: We create a pattern like this to disengage or disconnect ourselves from events and change so that we remain familiar with our surroundings and situations. If you keep disconnecting yourself from events that challenge you to grow in some way then you’re never going to get stronger in being able to create the life you deserve to live. If you keep blowing things off so that you don’t get stressed then after a while all that stress turns into anxiety then back into stress until you reach overwhelm and exhaust yourself in every way possible.
Break this pattern by connecting to yourself emotionally, let yourself vent when you’re feeling upset, let out a little scream or yell, cry for a few minutes and then pick yourself back up and put a big smile on your face and hold it for 2 to 3 minutes. If you’re feeling stressed out because things seem bigger than you or too much for you to deal with don’t disconnect from the world and hide, or walk away from the stressful situation. Take a moment and connect yourself to your source, whatever that may be for you, and just give everything over to that source so that you can focus on a solution and step up without feeling down, depressed, overwhelmed or stressed. Simply turn it over to your source and instantly you will feel the weight lift off of your shoulders.
4. To hide what we are feeling, to hide who we are on the inside. We create patterns that project a false image, a wall for us to stand behind so that others don’t completely connect with us.
This is the pattern of ego: We create a pattern like this to deal with low self-esteem or shyness. Some individuals create this pattern to feel more powerful, successful and above others. If you keep repeating this pattern then you’re going to find yourself alone a lot and you’re going to feel lost because you haven’t taken the time to express yourself or communicate in a way that moves you, that truly gets you going. This pattern will only keep you on a high for so long and then the false image you might have been projecting fades away and then you find yourself naked with the truth. So don’t build your personal foundation out of ice, because when the sun comes up its going to melt. Instead build it out of all that you are inside because then it will be strong enough not only to support you, but to support others who lean on you from time to time.
Break this pattern by eliminating the need to feed and protect your image and you will have broken the pattern of ego.

PRESS RELEASE!
Zebulon Thomas’ life has taken some unusual twists and turns since growing up in Brunswick. So seven months ago, he sat down to write about what he’s learned and his book, “Seven Days of Refining your Life,” is now a reality.
What Thomas has learned didn’t come from academia, however, it came from life experience. With a passion for a career in music, Zebulon dropped out of high school and hit the streets trying to become a hip-hop artist. There were a lot of auditions and promises and disappointments. He was basically out on the streets among gangs and drugs and violence. He could see how dangerous it was.
He decided to change his luck by trying to get into the music business in Miami and left with nothing but a bus ticket and a bookbag. He got there and was homeless. He often slept on the beach where he met some very interesting people including one man who had been wealthy and had lost it all. “He was the happiest person I ever met,” he said, “he told me he loved his life.”

The Four Ways to Break Through

The Four Ways to Break Through
1. Understand the challenge and truly see it how it is and not worse than what it is. Step back and view it from all sides.
So many of us are taking our problems or situations and blowing them up bigger than life; bigger than what they truly are. That‘s because as we begin to talk about it, we start thinking about it more, then we begin to add more and more to it until it becomes something that it‘s not. You know, you get all worked up over something or you get upset because things aren‘t working out the way you planned. Then you begin to process everything in your mind by playing the ―what ifs‖ over and over until it makes you sick, when all you had to do was begin to understand it. See it how it is and not worse than what it is. See it from all angles. We do this to ourselves over and over when we are facing a challenge. I call them challenges because problems seem too plain for me. You can call them whatever seems to be more accurate to you, but if I say, ―Oh, boy I’ve got a problem here‖ then I feel like I have nothing to gain by trying to solve it. On the other hand if I see things as a challenge then that means I‘m about to grow because I‘m going to challenge myself with this and I‘m really going to step up to the challenge. Try to understand the challenges you‘re facing day to day. See it how it is and don‘t make it worse than what it is. Simply step back and view it from all sides until you gain a clear view of what you‘re challenged with.
2. Find what influences you have around you currently that will get you to step up and take control of the challenge.
Do you have anyone around you who might have faced the same challenge or something similar to it? And they managed to turn that challenge around in a positive way. If you do, this is a person you can model from and gain influence and knowledge from. Also look around your environment. Is there anything there that can influence you to step up to the challenge, like looking at your children and knowing that if you step up you‘ve paved the way for them to do the same or so that they don‘t have to face the same challenges that you do? You might have made it a little
easier for them in the future. Maybe you‘re trying to lose weight or build muscle, you might notice someone working out or running up a large hill and that just sets you off in an upward direction to break through. Find the influences around you that enable you to break through what you are facing.
3. Know the value that the challenge holds.
Is it worth anything to you? What will you walk away with after stepping up to this challenge, not physically, but emotionally? Whether it is a problem or a goal we have challenged ourselves with, like losing a certain amount of weight or making a certain amount of money, in the end it‘s not about achieving or not achieving. It‘s about what we learned about ourselves and what we understood about the challenge. Finding that is more important than achieving the goal or not achieving the goal. If you didn‘t break through, then you know what doesn‘t work and you can begin to try again. If you did break through then you know what does work and now you know how you did it. Next time you can simply put yourself in that state of already achieving or breaking through by tapping into this emotion, like we discussed earlier in this chapter. Take these emotions and put them in the ―Now Box‖.
4. How can I get leverage to break through this challenge?
This is by far the most important way to break though, finding leverage. You can gain leverage by simply replacing your emotional connection to the challenge. Move out of fear, anxiety, stress and anger and move into passion, drive, focus and belief. I have a formula that I‘ve put together that has helped me in any challenge that I have been facing. It truly helps me gain leverage. It goes like this and you should write this down in your journal, but make sure you circle this one. This is something that I want you to go back to over and over again whenever you‘re facing a challenge. The Formula for Change Focus + Energy + Belief = Creation
When we focus on something, we begin to build energy from that focus. From that energy we start to build belief behind it.

Start Redefining Your Life Today!

Here is an exercise from my new book that is coming out that will help you create a well-balanced life.
THANKING THE BODY
In this next exercise I wrote down some areas of the body that you can focus on to help you get started. Read through the exercise and then take 5 minutes or more to thank your body.
Exercise
-Think about your lungs and how they oxygenate your blood. They oxygenate your body. Thank your lungs.
-Think about your heart and how it keeps pumping and moving all of your blood around in your body. It does an incredible job all the time. Thank your Heart.
-Think about your bones and how they hold you up. You have this incredible structure that is so strong. Thank your bones.
-Think about your muscles and how strong they are and how strong they can become. Maybe you’re someone who is a body builder and you’re able to lift all of this weight. You’ve got all of this massive strength. You’ve got these incredible muscles. You have muscles in your legs that help you run down the street. You have muscles in your arms that help you pick up your children. Thank your muscles.
-Think about your eyes and how they allow you to see all the beauties of the world, of this life. Thank your eyes.
-Think about your ears and how they allow you to hear. They truly bring a whole other experience to life. Thank your ears.
-Think about your teeth and how they help you chew your food and break it down so your stomach will not have to work so hard to digest it all. Thank your Teeth.
-Think about your brain and how it’s able to process all of your thoughts, all of those memories. It’s able to store all of those memories from years ago so that you can recall that time in your life in a split second. It’s able to process your visions of where you want to go in the future and how you want your life to turn out. Thank your brain.
-Think about your voice and how it allows you to speak. Maybe you’re someone who sings and you’ve got a beautiful voice. That’s how you connect with people and communicate. With your voice you can tell someone with every ounce of energy in your body that you love them dearly. “I love you. This is awesome. I’m so glad you’re in my life.” Thank your voice.
Take 5 minutes and continue to give thanks to your body. What else in your body can you give gratitude towards? Think about being healthy and strong. If there is a part of your body that feels out of balance right now, just bring your attention to it and say “Thank you.”
